Mass Shooting at Florida State University Leaves Six Injured

At least six people were hurt during a mass shooting at Florida State University (FSU) on Thursday, according to hospital officials. All of them had been shot. One person is in critical condition, while five others are seriously hurt.

The hospital, Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, confirmed that it was treating the injured victims. Police have arrested a suspect, according to two law enforcement sources.

The exact details of the injuries are still unclear, as the situation is developing.

Around noon, the university’s emergency alert system — called FSU Alert — sent out a warning about an “active shooter” near the Student Union building. The message told students and staff to take shelter, lock doors, stay away from windows, and be ready to protect themselves.

CNN has reached out to local police, the sheriff’s office, and FSU officials. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said it is actively involved in handling the situation on campus.

Emily Palmer, a 21-year-old FSU student, was near the Student Union when she received the alert. She spoke to CNN from her student housing and said she was shaking and very worried, especially for her friends who were still on campus.

Some of her friends were being evacuated from class by police, with their hands in the air for safety.

Another student, 20-year-old Joshua Sirmans, was inside the university’s main library when alarms started going off. Police then led him and other students out of the building, also with their hands raised, according to the Associated Press.

Messages from FSU Alert continued to tell people to stay where they were while police checked each room on campus for safety.

Richard Rind, who works at FSU as the director of transportation and parking, was also hiding in a nearby building. He told CNN that he heard gunshots and saw people running. He also mentioned that many emergency vehicles were on the scene, but he couldn’t see much because he was locked inside.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis posted on social media, saying his thoughts and prayers were with the FSU community. He added that state law enforcement officers were responding quickly.

Florida’s Attorney General James Uthmeier also said his office was involved and responding to the incident on FSU’s campus.
